New UN Women Ad Campaign
A friend of mine posted this on Facebook recently and I thought the ad is really thought-provoking and wonderful. It shows different Google autocorrect results finishing various sentences such as "women cannot, women shouldn't, and women should." The results are disturbing. All of the results are negative and some are violent. The ad does a good job showing diverse faces, however, they are all young and beautiful and none are old so I think the ad fails there. The comments on the post are all saying that they are not getting the same results and the ads are a hoax and bunch of other crap. Check it out for yourself!
This is a really powerful campaign. Its a perfect example of why feminism is needed.
ReplyDeleteI've seen this article floating around a lot recently, and I actually did some of the searches myself. Some of the results were simply horrifying, as seen in the article. Others that I found were: "Women cannot take a compliment," which I related to street harassment being seen as a compliment - and the idea in general as pertaining to rape culture; "women jokes," which was frustrating in that these 'jokes' are still seen as funny - a reflection on how deeply engrained sexism is in our culture; "women want to get dominated," which is problematic for obvious reasons.
ReplyDeleteAll of these things are based upon misogyny and harmful gender stereotypes. Like Ebony said, definitely a great example of why feminism is so necessary.
So powerful! It's so sad to see how gender stereotypes are literally everywhere.
ReplyDeleteThis seems like a great campaign. I just get so angry anytime I see these stereotypes and especially just realizing how prevalent they are online is seriously disturbing.
