I'm not 100% what to make sure of Lily Allen's new song/video. I get what she's going for and a part of me does kind of love the song, but some parts of it I do find it questionable. I found the video problematic, taking into consideration her whole feud on twitter with Azelia Banks a few months ago, I think it started with Azealia Banks saying Lily Allen's husband and children were ugly. Where Lily Allen responded to Azealia Banks (towards the end) on twitter linking a picture, of a penis with a wig on it saying that it was Azealia. And I don't think that this is the first racist comment that Allen has made, which is why I get the idea of the video itself but coming from her I feel put off by the video.
I like the idea of the song and how its meant to get people thinking about how not everyone can fit the standards of weight set by society. I didn't know about any of the personal feuds that Lily Allen has but just looking at the song, I think it sends a good message.
The video was terrible, in an attempt to help women she shitted on black women so thats not very good message. (See my comment on Lydia's post for more.) She did offer some explanation as to why the video was the way it was but her whole beef with Azelia makes me think she knew what she was doing.
OH GOSH! I had trouble watching the whole video! (Didn't help that I was sitting at the Bean while watching it) But besides that, I definitely agree with Ebony. She might have made it to be getting at the standards of beauty but she's totally degrading the women in her video.. It makes no sense to me..
I posted this video after you (sorry! I didn't realize it was already posted!) and i have A LOT of issues with it. She totally uses women of color's sexuality as a prop and plays into the racism of music videos. I was really disappointed by it. This could of been a ground breaking music video and it's not.
I agree with the previous responses... it's very troubling that the only way would occur to even one of the more progressive artists to make a satirical cometary on objectification in the music industry, is to objectify an even more marginalized group of women.
