I do not know if anyone knows who Andrea Gibson is but she’s
pretty must my favorite spoken word poet ever. She is awesome.
I came across this video over the summer and it’s wonderful. She’s describing a women who’s been
raped and it’s a beautiful piece. There
are some issues with it when I’m critical with it. For instant when she is being questioned she says “would you
talk to you sister, your daughter, or mother like this?” This is almost like saying “it’s
because I have relationships with other people and that means I shouldn’t be
raped.” I rather is be “I’M A HUMAN DON’T RAPE ME.” Plus it focuses on women victims and doesn’t
really mention the men that do. Besides
that it’s such a great piece that brings such a great perspective for people
who don’t understand the experience of sexual assault.
Everyone should watch.
Absolutely love Andrea Gibson and this piece! Everyone should look at any of her other poems, too. "Andrew" is a really great one about the social construct of gender, relevant to our class. (they all could be made relevant, really.) Great share, Lydia!
